THE FLINT HILLS OF KANSAS; have been a great photography teacher for me. As with any natural beauty . . . it is so awesome and it evokes so much emotion that it makes it super difficult to capture it and do it justice.
I have been shooting images of The Flint Hills for over 5 years now and every time I go out I am treated with this amazing challenge . . . to cause people to feel the emotion in my photos that I feel when I am there shooting it. Impossible . . . but a worthy challenge nonetheless.
BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY My first love in photography. When I first started shooting, I had the good fortune to meet a family friend who had made his career in photography. I'll never forget what he told me:
"What is the main thing people comment on when they look at a picture? They usually say something like "wow, look at that color!" When you take a black and white photo, you don't have the color as your crutch. You have to evoke emotion and appreciation without it. It's takes a much better photographer to do that than to simply capture great colors."
Capturing great colors is also a difficult task. But old Bill's words served as a great inspiration to me in pursuing black and white photography.
PEOPLE; We were made for relationships and each of us is our own, unique creation, unlike any other on the planet . . . that is special!
Photos of people allows us to connect of each others' culture, history and upbringing and allow us a glimpse of the uniqueness of each.
AFRICA; We spent quite a bit of time on mission in Kenya, Africa. The Kenyan people will always have a special place in our hearts. The life there is hard but the hearts are soft. We thought we might go there to bless them . . . WE were the ones to be blessed!
ITALY; Is an incredible place for photography. Everything is over the top . . . from the art to architecture to people and the landscape . . . what an inspiring place to shoot!
I can never get enough of Italy!
LANDSCAPES . . . One of the things in this world that does the best job of connecting us to our creator is getting outside!
When I am out in nature shooting landscapes, is when the reality of the magnificent glory of our world hits me between the eyes.
I think it's healthy for us to be humble . . . and being out in God's creation is a great way for that to happen!
